08/20/22 Judging has been the basis for issues for a long time - taking too long, drama regarding results, bias, etc. Kenren has attempted to put a points system together that keeps the spirit of our system while streamlining and standardizing the process. It's a lot to take in, but once you get in the swing of it, preparing pages with these points takes way less time than doing a layout change lol! If you have any questions, please post them in the judging-help channel on Discord for now. If anyone needs help with anything, please let an admin know! We would like to give everyone one week to get things settled, and then we would like to run July Wk 2 using this system closing 8/27/22 (or earlier if everyone is ready). If it works out, we would like to run two game weeks per RL week to get things moving! Thank you all so much for being her!e

07/21/22 it's official! We're back! It looks like June Wk 4 was almost fully judged, so make sure you get that updated if you hadn't! We will plan to close the next week (July Wk 1) on Thursday, August 4th. This close day may change, but it's not a bad place to start! For now we'll be doing one game week per RL week to get back into things. Please remember that starting the second half of the year, 3yos can compete against older horses without automatic lower placements.
As an aside, because this is fairly sudden after a whole year, we will not be allowing reclaims on horses for members not currently active for a few months. We will readdress this going forward if needed. Thank you all for understanding!

2. The Basics, Part 3: Horse Ownership
HORSE OWNERSHIP BASICS
1. To reiterate, the following information needs to be on your horse's page: Name, pedigree (sire/dam), year of birth/age, brief personality description and racing style, surface/distance preferences, workouts, race record, progeny record (if applicable/horse is breeding stock). This is true whether you own the horse or the horse is a lease - more on that later!
2. Race results absolutely need to be kept up to date. They should always be updated before the next race week runs.
3. When creating a horse, the following rules regarding names must be respected:
a. Your horse must have a unique name; check the Horse Directory to make sure the name, or anything super similar, isn't already taken. When in doubt, ask in the Discord admin help channel.
b. Your horse cannot have the name of a famous/prominent real life horse. There are some horses on the site that do have famous horse names, we know, but as of this writing this rule is now strictly enforced.
c. Make sure you are using proper height units for your horse! This means your horse can be 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 16, etc. hands high. There is no such height as 15.5 or 16.7.
d. All horses on FF are Thoroughbreds. The exception are companion horses that you might create for your stable for fun; these do not need to be approved by staff and can just be created as you'd like.
e. Use a picture of a racehorse for your horse! This isn't required, but it makes the most sense

5. All horses that you own must be posted in your Horse Directory post.

HORSE AGING
1. You may indicate a horse's age using the game year it was born/created [i.e. Y10 = in Y19, this horse is 9 years old] or by simply stating its age [9 years old].
2. Every horse gets 1 year older on January Wk1 of each game year.
3. At the present moment, one game year tends to equal one real life year, but this sometimes changes if we do more than one game week per RL week. We're currently about 1 year behind RL. Each month has 4 racing weeks (except March, which has five), and races run once per week (unless otherwise announced). There is generally a one to two week break between December Week Four and January Week One, which allows for everybody to catch up and get ready for the next game year.
BUYBACKS
1. The buybacks system is not an optional system; it is something that every member of our site must respect. Buybacks essentially states that if you sell a horse to someone or allow them to breed to one of your horses for a foal, you have buyback rights on that horse/foal. If that member leaves, you can reclaim the horse. If the member wants to sell the horse/foal, you have the right to ask for the horse back rather than it being sold to another member.
2. Some horses have more than one person with buyback rights, maybe because the horse was bred by two different members or has been sold several times. The order of buybacks must be determined between members but in case of sales is generally chronological, i.e. who had the horse last, then who before them, etc. Breeder buybacks will trump sales buybacks.
3. Buybacks on a breeding horse may allow you buybacks on that horse's foals in case that horse/foals are owned by an inactive member. However, this is situational - discuss with staff first.
4. Buybacks can sometimes be used if a horse is being misused in some way, i.e. not being raced actively. This, however, is an extreme case. Talk to staff first to decide if it is a big enough infraction to warrant you invoking your reclaim rights. In all cases, warn the member in question first that you are considering buybacks and give them a chance to improve their care of the horse; don't reclaim immediately.
5. A horse sitting in an inactive stable who has no active buybacks will remain in that stable.
6. If a member has left the game and does not show any intention of coming back, it is very likely that you will fully inherit the ownership of any horses they have "leased" to you or left in your care. This likelihood increases the longer that that member has been away. If a member comes back after having been gone for a long time, you are not expected to immediately give up all of the horses you leased from them. Likewise, a member coming back after a long hiatus should not expect to immediately re-inherit all of the stock that was re-homed in their absence. It is perfectly okay for said member to PM current owners and ask if they'd be willing to sell the stock back or give reserves, but the current owners are under no obligation to return the stock. That said, most people are pretty willing to give things back if you ask nicely!
7. We understand this system of buybacks can be a bit confusing, so please ask staff if you have any questions or doubts!
BUYING/SELLING/LEASING
1. Visit the Marketplace and/or the #sales channel on Discord to see if there are any horses for sale, or to post a Wanted ad saying you are in the market looking for some horses.
2. Buying = you own the horse and can make all decisions regarding it, i.e. gelding/racing/retiring/breeding, as you see fit, pending what the previous owner's conditions of sale are. Leasing = you race the horse for the time specified in the actual owner's lease agreement with you. Leased horses are included in your Horse Directory post. Bought horses must be added to your Horse Directory post. Horses that you have leased out/sold must be removed from your Horse Directory post (the leased horse should only be included by the stable currently in possession of it).
3. Acquired a horse and don't like the name? Unfortunately, you cannot rename a horse if they have run a race (even if the horse is a yearling and the only races they have been in are prospects). However, if the horse is completely unraced, you may rename them as you see fit. Please inform the breeder(s) of said horse if you are changing the name.
SITE-WIDE SALES
1. The Final Furlong Sales Company conducts major site-wide sales. You can visit the site and see the rules of sale here as well as view records for past sales.
2. To enter a horse in an upcoming sale, reply to the sales thread (which will be announced) with a link to your horse. You can view the Catalog for an upcoming sale on the sales site.
3. Sales are held three times a year: the New Years Sale (between December Wk4/January Wk1), the May Sale (starts May Wk1), and the September Sale (starts September Wk1). Entries for each sale generally conclude by the game week before the sale.
RETIRING/BREEDING HORSES
1. Horses are generally raced through their 4yo season, though occasionally some are retired younger for a variety of reasons.
2. All horses must retire at the conclusion of their six year old seasons. Some exceptions can be made; please PM the Older Horse Appeal form (in a reply to this thread) to a staff member if you are looking to run a horse past its six year old season. These exceptions include if a horse started racing later in its career, has been inactive/unraced for much of its career, etc.
3. Once a horse is retired, it cannot race. You can retire at any time during the year. Mares that are retired after July Week One cannot be bred that season; they can only be bred the following season. Stallions can be bred, but this should be avoided (and there likely won't be any open mares that late in the season, anyway).
4. Retiring is not something that you need to announce; you can just do it. Nothing needs to be officialized!

WHEN A HORSE GETS OLD…INJURED…
1. When a horse is getting older and you believe it is time for the horse to pass on, feel free to mark the horse as Deceased on your site and in your Horse Directory page, but do not delete the horse's page! This is important for record-keeping.
2. There are no surprises/disasters on this site, so you're never going to have a horse come out of a race injured...unless that's what you want. You are free to decide that your horse is injured in some way and you can decide the severity of the injury. This is totally up to you.
