Races close on Mondays at 9PM EST! Our Next Sale Begins: January Y22.
02/05/23 We're almost ready to kick off the New Year here at Final Furlong! The New Years Sale is still OPEN for bids - lots of ponies needing homes! As well, we're hoping to close January Week One races by MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6. However, if we need to extend closing date so more people can get entered, just let us know in the Discord. In addition to getting your pages ready, don't forget to use your bonus points if you'd like!
01/29/23 Congratulations to KENREN for winning the Y21 Breeders' Cup Betting Contest! You've won a breeding reserve to FIFTY DREAMS (Firestone Stud) and 2x 2 furlong extensions + 5 bonus horse points! Lolly finished 2nd, and Cruisey finished 3rd.
12/08/22 The Breeder's Cup Betting Contest will make a return for Y21!!! It'll be a little bit different because of the new points system, but get ready for some end of year fun 😄
11/21/22 Entries for the New Year Sale are now open! We know it seems a bit early, but with life things we're going to need time to make sure things are right lol. Please follow the link here: https://final-furlong.proboards.com/thread/2304/y22-new-year-sale
08/20/22 Judging has been the basis for issues for a long time - taking too long, drama regarding results, bias, etc. Kenren has attempted to put a points system together that keeps the spirit of our system while streamlining and standardizing the process. It's a lot to take in, but once you get in the swing of it, preparing pages with these points takes way less time than doing a layout change lol! If you have any questions, please post them in the judging-help channel on Discord for now. If anyone needs help with anything, please let an admin know! We would like to give everyone one week to get things settled, and then we would like to run July Wk 2 using this system closing 8/27/22 (or earlier if everyone is ready). If it works out, we would like to run two game weeks per RL week to get things moving! Thank you all so much for being her!e
07/27/22 To start July off fresh, we've been playing around with a new theme for Final Furlong! Make sure to check out 'Sonorous' under your profile ❤️ Feel free to use whatever theme works best for yourself. We can't wait to get back to racing!
07/21/22 it's official! We're back! It looks like June Wk 4 was almost fully judged, so make sure you get that updated if you hadn't! We will plan to close the next week (July Wk 1) on Thursday, August 4th. This close day may change, but it's not a bad place to start! For now we'll be doing one game week per RL week to get back into things. Please remember that starting the second half of the year, 3yos can compete against older horses without automatic lower placements.
As an aside, because this is fairly sudden after a whole year, we will not be allowing reclaims on horses for members not currently active for a few months. We will readdress this going forward if needed. Thank you all for understanding!
07/08/22 GO answer the poll ❤️ https://final-furlong.proboards.com/thread/2232/ff-restart-poll
May, 2018 The black hood and blinkers with the red shadow roll had become a trademark for Greasy Creek's older runner, the California-bred gelding was a late bloomer for the up and coming stable. A big, bulky horse it took him some time to get rolling but once he did, Steel was like a diesel engine and could just chug on and on forever it seemed. It was for these reasons that he was being stretched out to run longer distance races, his pedigree certainly seemed to indicate he could go the extra mile as he was related to two Belmont Stakes winners on his dam's side.
Sam was working at another track today, exercising the barn's two year olds and Steel's future jockey for his official racing career needed to get a feel for the big gelding anyways. Arturo Ruiz slipped easily into the stirrups and left Frank Wiseman's side in the homestretch as the two cantered to the first turn, passing a few other horses in the process and sticking to a tractor path just a few feet off the rail where the dirt was a little more packed down. Once on the backstretch Arturo let a loop out from his reins and gave the horse a little more room to extend into a gallop, working their way down the back before kissing at the big bay and pumping his arms at him. Steel drove onward and lengthened stride into the turn, banking surprisingly well for such a big horse but drifting wide into the stretch as he failed to switched leads before being pulled back toward the rail and continuing his drive.
Frank thought to himself that the horse sounded like a freight train as he sped passed, driving for the wire and passing beneath it before pulling up willingly. 1:14 3/5 for six furlongs, he was no sprinter but then again, three-quarters of a mile wasn't what they were aiming for anyways. Only a few races would tell if this colt could get up enough steam to close in deep stretch like they were hoping he would.
September Y18 When he was good, he was great, and Steel had certainly been that and more back in August when he had raced home in first after a furious, closing kick to get up just in time to win the Autumn Cup. When that red shadow roll hit the wire first, there was no keeping his connections in their seats, they couldn’t get down to the winner’s circle fast enough. Never mind that their gelding hadn’t been the favorite today, he had given it his all and was coming home with another notch in his belt.
His second try on the grass came next in early September where he also stretched out past his comfort zone of ten furlongs, going for the mile and a half distance for the first time. Steel once more showed a devastating turn of foot at the top of the stretch, bearing down on his rivals and passing them like a whirlwind right down the center of the track but unfortunately came up just short this time, possibly fatigued from the extra two furlongs. But it was an impressive showing and just the experience he needed to compete this week at The Wire, where he had broken his maiden back in May.
As a prep for the Magic Money Derby, he jogged a mile this morning after breezing the week prior. A large and imposing animal with extensive musculature, he was built like a linebacker and just as slow at the snap but give him some time to build up a head of steam, and look out!
