Personality: Magic is Willow Creek’s resident pain in the ass. He’s incredibly intelligent and boy doesn’t he know it. Magic seems to find his enjoyment in winding up the staff whenever possible and making everyone’s lives as difficult as he can. He’s never easy to catch in the paddock, an exercise which he views as a game, he’ll wait until you’re inches away from him and then try to run off at the last minute. Once you finally do catch him he’ll dance around endlessly, incapable of standing still. Everything is a game to him. The colt loves to wind up his handlers and push things as far as he can. If there’s one thing he loves its attention and he really doesn’t care if it’s negative or positive; if he wants your attention, you’ll sure as hell know about it. Magic is mischievous with a face like butter wouldn’t melt and yet somehow it’s hard not to love the cheeky colt despite his poor manners and lack of respect. When in his stall he’s affectionate and will always prick his ears up and nicker a greeting at anyone passing by. He gets along with other horses to some extent; the difficulty is that his playful nature can easily wind up certain horses and Magic delights in any sort of negative reaction so he’s best kept away from certain horses. When it comes to people he definitely plays favourites and top of that list is Lucas King who has successfully won his respect. This larger than life colt has definitely quickly made a name for himself around the stable

Personality: Manny is a real people pleaser. He will always nuzzle his head into anyone who pops their head over his stable door and his super affectionate nature has made him popular around the yard. You’ll often hear the colt before you see him; he’s always whinnying and nickering and snorting, anything to make sure you haven’t forgotten about him and make sure you know he’s still there. He’s never noisier than at feed time when he steps it up a further notch – he can be really greedy when it comes to food and he’s always hopeful for treats. Manny is a gorgeous horse and doesn’t he know it! He seems to have an eye for the camera, he never fails to notice when there’s one around and he always manages to look at it and prick he’s ears forwards. Despite his enjoyment of human company the colt is generally quite aggressive with other horses with just a few exceptions: he seems to have unusually made friends with Magic Music and has few issues being in the same paddock as Murphy’s Law. The rest of the time though he’ll flatten his ears back and lash out at any other horses who dare come too close. Despite his kind nature around people and his general wanting to please, he’s a stressy horse. For a start he’s naturally quite anxious and he will spook easily at loud noises or any other sort of surprise. His aggression towards other horses seems to be largely down to Manny being anxious and feeling easily threatened by other horses. He does also have his bad days with people when he’ll get stroppy and he seems especially prone to sulking if he doesn’t feel he’s been given the attention he deserves. He’ll rarely lash out as a result of his moods but he will occasionally bite although he becomes very apologetic afterwards. For the most part Manny is just less responsive and more difficult to work with when he’s being ridden if he’s in a mood.

Personality: Obie is a real social butterfly when it comes to both people and equines, both of whom he enjoys the company of and seems to naturally get along with. He’s a reasonably vocal horse, he’s not at all afraid to express himself and noise seems to be his most frequently used method of doing so. He’s not difficult to catch in the paddock provided you bring treats in which case he’ll come along happily without any fuss. If you forget to bring treats though god help you because you’ll have a really tough time catching him. He’ll demand treats as noisily as he can from anyone who passes his stall too. In general though Obie severely dislikes being kept in his stall for any length of time and he’ll quite literally kick up a fuss if anyone tries to do so. He much prefers being in his paddock where he can roam freely and socialise with other horses. Other than that though the colt is relatively easy going and doesn’t cause too much trouble.

Personality: Tilly is always passionate when out on the track whether it’s on race day or just a workout. She loves to run and always delights in being allowed to do so, eagerly rising to whatever task she’s presented with. You will rarely see the filly give anything less than her all. She’s sweet natured and eager to please, making easy friends with her handlers. She enjoys being fussed over and is always happy to be groomed or washed, enjoying the extra attention without ever becoming demanding about it. With other horses Tilly is eager to be accepted and to get along and so rarely causes any issues. She’s certainly not really a fighter when it comes to other equines, leaving all her competitive spirit for the track rather than engaging in any aggressive behaviour off it.

Personality: Queen is really a fitting name for Hera who certainly considers herself as such. In her every interaction the filly expects to be treated like royalty and will turn her nose up at anyone she deems isn’t treating her with the respect she deserves. She demands respect and adoration without doing anything to actually earn it which she in fact seems to do the opposite of. Her temper is infamous around the yard and is easily sparked making her often difficult to deal with and work with. She can be vicious when enraged and is always best to keep an eye on her head lest she take a chunk out of your arm. Very few have managed to command this filly’s respect but for the few stubborn enough to earn it she is considerably better-behaved around. This is largely because she has learnt she cannot get away with her brattish behaviour around certain individuals. For those not lucky enough to earn Hera’s respect everything is a power struggle and she does not like to lose.

Personality: It really is my way or the highway with Nova who will throw some serious fits and temper tantrums when things fail to go her way. She’s aggressive and commonly tries to take chunks out of anyone who tries to tell her what to do. The only people she’ll tolerate any sort of direction from are those with a will equal to her own. This is mainly because Nova will only try to defy her handlers if she actually feels she’ll be successful in doing so and so won’t bother if she feels she’s likely to be unsuccessful with certain people. The filly has a real attitude problem and can be particularly mean-spirited when in a bad mood. She’s a loner, preferring to be in her stall and away from other horses as much as possible. Nova has a severe dislike for being disturbed once she’s made herself comfortable in her stall so don’t expect friendly greetings, you’ll generally be greeted by pinned ears if you approach her stall, and naturally she’s particularly irritable when first moved out of her stall. She’s always aggressive towards other horses, determined to establish her dominance and assert who is boss and has no qualms about getting into fights.

Personality: Pippin is a real sweetheart when it comes to people, with a heart of gold. She is always content when in the company of people and whilst she isn’t demanding of attention she greatly enjoys it. She’s very intelligent with perceptive eyes that understand so much more than you’d think. Despite her manner with people, when it comes to equines she’s a totally different horse. The filly is completely intolerant of other horses at her worst and grumpy around them at her best. She’ll pin her ears back and bare her teeth until she’s left well alone. In all but her worst moods though she’s unlikely to actually start fights with other horses though she will happily fight if another horse starts it. Her rapid change in behaviour when in the presence of other horses is rather startling to watch.

Personality: Murphy has a lovely nature. He’s about as easy going and laid back as it gets, almost always totally calm and composed no matter the situation. He’s almost totally bombproof with only the really big surprises spooking him and even then he’s not the type to bolt or madly buck his rider off in response. He’s a real gentleman: not too excitable and really easy to control. He’s honest enough to do whatever is asked of him by his jockey although it’s not always a guarantee that he’ll give his all. Murphy is perhaps sometimes a little too laid back to the point of being lazy but generally he’s fine with a little encouragement. The only time it’s a real problem is when he’s in a grumpy mood and then he becomes far more stubborn about being lazy and much harder to get to do anything. He enjoys race day enough though that we’ve never had a problem with him at an actual race. The only time you’ll see Murphy get really excited is around feed time – this horse is totally motivated by food – and he seems to bond particularly with those who are tasked with feeding him. Not being fed when he feels he should be is a sure-fire way to put him in a foul mood although most of the time he’ll quickly forget about it once he’s actually eaten. He’s not likely to be aggressive towards other horses he’s just generally uninterested with them for the most part with the odd exception when he’s in a particularly bad mood. When it comes to people though Murphy wouldn’t hurt a fly regardless of his mood, the most he’ll do when especially grumpy is just to ignore them. His love for food makes his mood swings easier to handle as only the worst of his moods can’t be won over with a treat.

Personality: Zeus is the definition of the phrase ‘gentle giant’. Despite his size, Zeus is the perfect gentleman, always perfectly polite, standing still whenever he’s needed to as the perfect example for the younger colts. He has good manners and is rarely known to cause trouble or kick up a fuss. That said, Zeus will only tolerate instructions up to a point and if someone gets too heavy handed with him he’ll just stop listening altogether. He’s happy to work with others as long as he doesn’t feel he’s being ordered around; he wants to work with you rather than for you. He will never become aggressive towards people, he will simply become stubborn and unresponsive but he has never been known to kick out or bite. Very occasionally when pushed too far he might intentionally deposit his rider on the floor but he’ll never go further than that, he’s just making a point. As long as his riders are aware of this stubborn streak though Zeus is generally a pleasant, hard-working ride.

She’s easily excited and it can be a challenge to get her to stand still in order to groom her. Cocoa is eager, almost too much so to the extent that turning her round in circles is sometimes the only way to slow her down at all.

Ultimately though Winnie wants to impress.

Otherwise though Pearl likes to be left alone. She’s not a sociable horse and will turn her back on you as soon as she’s put in her stall, making it clear to you she’s not interested by ignoring you until you go away. Surprisingly though, she doesn’t seem to get along too badly with other horses.
