Races close on Mondays at 9PM EST! Our Next Sale Begins: January Y22.
02/05/23 We're almost ready to kick off the New Year here at Final Furlong! The New Years Sale is still OPEN for bids - lots of ponies needing homes! As well, we're hoping to close January Week One races by MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6. However, if we need to extend closing date so more people can get entered, just let us know in the Discord. In addition to getting your pages ready, don't forget to use your bonus points if you'd like!
01/29/23 Congratulations to KENREN for winning the Y21 Breeders' Cup Betting Contest! You've won a breeding reserve to FIFTY DREAMS (Firestone Stud) and 2x 2 furlong extensions + 5 bonus horse points! Lolly finished 2nd, and Cruisey finished 3rd.
12/08/22 The Breeder's Cup Betting Contest will make a return for Y21!!! It'll be a little bit different because of the new points system, but get ready for some end of year fun 😄
11/21/22 Entries for the New Year Sale are now open! We know it seems a bit early, but with life things we're going to need time to make sure things are right lol. Please follow the link here: https://final-furlong.proboards.com/thread/2304/y22-new-year-sale
08/20/22 Judging has been the basis for issues for a long time - taking too long, drama regarding results, bias, etc. Kenren has attempted to put a points system together that keeps the spirit of our system while streamlining and standardizing the process. It's a lot to take in, but once you get in the swing of it, preparing pages with these points takes way less time than doing a layout change lol! If you have any questions, please post them in the judging-help channel on Discord for now. If anyone needs help with anything, please let an admin know! We would like to give everyone one week to get things settled, and then we would like to run July Wk 2 using this system closing 8/27/22 (or earlier if everyone is ready). If it works out, we would like to run two game weeks per RL week to get things moving! Thank you all so much for being her!e
07/27/22 To start July off fresh, we've been playing around with a new theme for Final Furlong! Make sure to check out 'Sonorous' under your profile ❤️ Feel free to use whatever theme works best for yourself. We can't wait to get back to racing!
07/21/22 it's official! We're back! It looks like June Wk 4 was almost fully judged, so make sure you get that updated if you hadn't! We will plan to close the next week (July Wk 1) on Thursday, August 4th. This close day may change, but it's not a bad place to start! For now we'll be doing one game week per RL week to get back into things. Please remember that starting the second half of the year, 3yos can compete against older horses without automatic lower placements.
As an aside, because this is fairly sudden after a whole year, we will not be allowing reclaims on horses for members not currently active for a few months. We will readdress this going forward if needed. Thank you all for understanding!
07/08/22 GO answer the poll ❤️ https://final-furlong.proboards.com/thread/2232/ff-restart-poll

2. The Basics, Part 5: Breeding
RETIRING A HORSE
1. The youngest a horse can be bred is three years old. Most people race their horses through the end of their four-year-old season (or later)
2. Once retired, stallions/mares are used for breeding. Geldings are generally used as track ponies or companion animals in workouts.
3. You may have noticed on the Stable Directory page that many members have a Racing Division and a Breeding Division. This is just a way that members keep horse profiles separated, which is useful when a member has a lot of racingstock and a lot of breedingstock. This is perfectly okay for you to do provided you give a link to your Breeding Division site in the Stable Directory thread and link to your breedingstock on the Breeding Division site in the Horse Directory thread as well.
STANDING A STALLION
1. Stallions can be bred immediately upon retirement.
2. Stallions may not have more than 6 offspring in their breeding career. Most people choose not to have more than 1-2 foals per year by one stallion so they are not competing against each other.
3. To advertise that your stallion is at stud, you can post a stud catalog in the Breeding Shed. You can also advertise in the #breeding channel on Discord (as well as discuss breeding in general there!).
BROODMARES
1. Mares can have only one foal in a season. The exception is if you have a twin voucher.
2. Mares also cannot have more than 6 foals in their breeding careers.
3. Foals are 'born' as weanlings and become yearlings the following year.
5. You can advertise open mares just as you would studs.
RESERVES
1. A "reserve" refers to a reserved breeding that somebody has for a horse. For example, if I had a reserve to Shiver Me Timbers, then I'd have the right to breed to Shiver Me Timbers at some point in time.
2. Reserves given out cannot exceed the maximum number of foals a horse can have. Be careful giving out too many!
3. It is extremely important to keep track of reserves!! Always ask the person you are buying a horse from if the horse has any reserves that you should be aware of.
4. It is good practice that you let previous owners (who may have gone inactive and then come back) have a reserve to a horse that you currently own who used to be theirs, but this is not mandatory.
MAKING GOOD PAIRINGS
1. Dirt horses should be bred to dirt horses, turf horses to turf horses, and dual surface to anybody (though if not bred to another dual horse, they'll inherit the surface preference of the non-dual parent).
2. Horses will generally mimic the distance preferences of their parents; sprinters are likely to produce sprinters, etc. A horse that runs 9-12 furlongs who is bred to a 5-8 horse will probably produce a 7-10 horse.
3. Though staff do not regulate what distance/surface your horse ends up with, we do notice irregularities and will tell you if something should be changed/isn't likely given the parents' preferences.
4. The only exception to the Laws of Logic (as we'll call the above) is if you use a Custom Foal Kit, Surface Supreme, or furlong extensions on the resulting foal. (More on what these are in the Items Incentives guide.)
5. For more on making good pairings and some information on pedigrees and lines in the game, see the Breeding guide!
BACKBREEDING & PLANNING AHEAD
1. Backbreeding is allowed. This refers to breeding a horse this year but setting the date of birth in a past year (for example, breeding a horse in Y19 but saying he/she was born in Y17).
2. Backbreeding can only be done if a) both sire/dam were retired during the year of birth, b) the dam does not have another foal that season, and c) both sire/dam owner agree for this to be done.
Planning Ahead
1. It is perfectly acceptable to plan future breedings and post those breedings on your site! Just know that your foals won't officially exist until the year of their birth comes and you've put them in your Horse Directory thread. DO NOT have them visible on your site until they are officially 'born'! This is to keep things from getting confusing.
2. On that same note, you cannot reserve names for your horses; no names are official until the year that the horse is born and you have posted a link to their page on your Horse Directory thread.
3. Distance/surface preferences for foals do not have to be finalized until they are 2 years old. You are free to change them. Once a horse turns two and has started in a race, you will need a Rerouter to change distance preferences.
